Man United contract talks with Aaron Wan-Bissaka appear to be on hold.
Manchester United Football Club have been busy signing (and bedding in) new players over the last few months, with the Red Devils squad now starting to feel more like one Erik ten Hag would like to work with.
Injuries have hit the club hard this term, with the Dutch gaffer working with one hand tied behind his back at times. Among the players who have been sidelined is Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
The Englishman is expected back before the November international break, which is just a few weeks away. Having our best right-sided defender available will be a massive lift for the whole back line, which has been struggling of late.
When Ten Hag first took charge, Wan-Bissaka wasn’t really in the manager’s plans. The ex-Crystal Palace man had to earn that place in the team. It took Wan-Bissaka many months to do just that, but he was justifying those starts.
Not too long ago, there were rumours which suggested Wan-Bissaka was in line for a new deal at the club, with his current terms expiring next summer.
However, the Daily Mail now seem to think otherwise. According to their latest information, contract talks with the 25-year-old appear to have ‘gone quiet’. Instead, it looks as though the Reds will trigger a 12-month extension clause in his current deal, ensuring he’s tied down until at least summer 2025.
It’s also written that United will now look at his situation again in the New Year. Presumably, Ten Hag wants to wait for Wan-Bissaka to return to the field, allowing the player to focus solely on his football, rather than worrying about what’s going to happen in the long term.
I’m still of the impression that Ten Hag isn’t fully sold on Wan-Bissaka as a starting right-back for an elite level club, but he’s the best we have right now. Perhaps only extending his deal by twelve months makes sense, particularly if the club do choose to move in a different direction in that area of the field.
