Man United have eyes on emerging Real Betis talent, Assane Diao.
Over the last decade or so, I cannot help but feel that Manchester United have moved away from what they do best – signing young players and developing their talents. More recently, big bucks has been spent on ready-made stars. It’s fair to say that hasn’t worked.
Perhaps that situation will change under the new regime when Sir Jim Ratcliffe takes control of footballing operations. Ahead of that time, though, the transfer rumours will continue to swirl, particularly as on-field performances have been so poor.
The latest claim does in fact link a younger player with a move to Old Trafford, with Man United said to be keen on Real Betis’ Assane Diao.
It’s Estadio Deportivo with the story. They reckon United are among the sides interested in signing the teenage starlet, though there is stiff competition from fellow Premier League clubs. Newcastle, Chelsea and Liverpool are also keen – which should tell you everything you need to know about Diao’s ability.
The young man only made his first-team breakthrough this season, scoring a couple of goals and making a positive impression for Betis in La Liga.
Diao, from Senegal, currently is believed to have a €30m (£26m) release clause in his current deal, which expires in 2027. Understandably, Betis are trying to tie the winger down to a new longer-term deal on more money, in order to increase his release clause and transfer value.
In this current situation, I find it hard to see how United will win any sort of transfer battle right now. The club just isn’t in a good place and as soon as there is other interested parties showing genuine interest in a player, it’s tough to see how the Red Devils come out on top.
