Raphael Varane is looking set to leave Man United when the summer transfer window rolls around.
Manchester United’s defence suddenly looks rather different. The Old Trafford side have been struggling without Lisandro Martinez and, more recently, Raphael Varane.
The Frenchman has fallen out of favour, with Jonny Evans starting games ahead of the World Cup winner for tactical reasons.
Obviously, a man of Varane’s calibre was never going to be best-pleased with the decision, though judging by his cameo against Galatasaray, it was justified.
Now, like clockwork, rumours linking Varane with a permanent exit are starting to flow. It’s The Sun providing the latest on that front. They state that United star is ‘set to leave’ the club, but it won’t be until next summer.
Ten Hag won’t let the Frenchman depart just yet as he’s planning an ‘assault’ on the Premier League’s top four.
However, when the summer rolls around, a move to Italy or Saudi could be in the offing for Varane. It is believed he would cost in the region of £17-20m, but more than that, it’s about getting his £340,000-a-week wages off the books.
News of a fallout with the manager is not true, it’s just that Varane isn’t really suited to the way Ten Hag likes to play the game at present. The ex-Real Madrid man is now fourth choice in the pecking order and that’s a vast amount of money to pay someone who is rarely going to play when everyone is fit.
I can’t say I’m surprised to hear that Varane will likely leave in six months’ time, but we are losing someone with a winning attitude. That will have to be replaced with someone of equal quality and calibre.
