Man United have made initial contact over the possible acquisition of SL Benfica’s Joao Neves.
Manchester United, heck, the whole footballing world could always do with a player like Joao Neves.
Not too long ago, Bruno Fernandes admitted just how much he’d love to play with his international teammate at club level. This young man is an exceptional talent.
As a result, United and other top tier sides are already looking at ways to bring in the man from Portugal.
The latest update in the transfer comes from A Bola, as the excellent Sport Witness provide the translation. They say that SL Benfica have made Neves ‘untouchable’ at this time, as they believe Neves can be a great help to their title hopes in the 2023/24 season.
Understandably, Benfica would rather not listen to offers for Neves, though that is not stopping United from making their move. According to A Bola, United have made ‘exploratory contacts’ over the signing of the supremely talented midfielder.
Benfica are telling United (and all other clubs) that they will not negotiate his transfer in January, and the only way Neves will leave if his huge release clause is met; £105m (€120m).
A Bola goes on to add that Neves will receive massive offers when the summer rolls around, meaning that even if United made a bid, there would be hefty competition for his signature.
The verdict
I just find it hard to envisage a situation during which Neves actively chooses United. Bruno could well be the trump card, but it’d also be reliant on the Red Devils finishing the season strongly and forcing their way into the Champions League places.
Players of Neves’ talent do not come around very often. It’d be a stunning piece of business if United could pull it off. It’d also take a huge chunk of the transfer budget, but he’d be worth it.
