England boss Gareth Southgate is set to contact Kobbie Mainoo in an effort to ensure he chooses England for his international football.
Kobbie Mainoo has made just one Premier League start. His talent is obvious. Those players who have been watching the young man since pre-season will know all about that natural ability and talent.
It was gutting to see the midfielder go down with a multi-month injury, though he’s now back and looking to make a name for himself.
As you’d expect when you’re this talented, world eyes are starting to take notice. Now, according to the Daily Star, Gareth Southgate is set to make his play, in an effort to ensure Mainoo sticks with England for his footballing commitments.
Mainoo is also eligible for Ghana, though it’s stated that the Three Lions coach ‘will target’ the youngster in a bid to keep him out of their ‘clutches’.
Mainoo has represented England at U17, U18 and U19 level, but is still eligible for Ghana through his parents. The England manager is expected to hold talks with Mainoo, while also fast-tracking the young man up to U21 level in the process.
Speaking from my own personal point of view, I’d be surprised if Mainoo switches Ghana for England, though it does seem wise of the England manager to ensure any small chance of that happening is eliminated.
From a purely selfish point of view, losing Mainoo to AFCON every now and then in January would be gutting, while the travel distance during the international break only increases if he were to choose Ghana. With the greatest of respect to the elite African nation, Mainoo would also have more chance at winning international silverware with England.
I gotta’ say, the thought of a Kobbie Mainoo, Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice midfield combination is rather appealing…
