Facundo Pellistri has been challenged to make the step up into the Man United starting line-up on a regular basis.
Manchester United have had many right-wing issues this season. Mason Greenwood, Jadon Sancho and Antony have all had off-field problems, leaving the club somewhat short in that area.
As a result, chances have been presented to others, namely Facundo Pellistri. The young man has looked pretty impressive from time-to-time, particularly as an impact player off the substitutes bench late on in games.
The ability is so obviously there. It’s now about making the leap to that next level, and earning enough trust to start these big games.
The manager was asked directly about Pellistri, and whether he is ready to play matches from the off, starting with Galatasaray this weekend as Marcus Rashford is suspended.
Erik ten Hag responded with a challenge to the United youngster, claiming he has to ‘make a step’ from the bench and become a starting XI regular. He hinted that this process will take some time, but it’s up to the player.
Check out what Erik ten Hag had to say when asked if Facundo Pellistri has what it takes to become a starter:
“For Pelli also, he has to make a step from a bench player – often having a very good impact – to a starting XI player. We will see how quick that process will go.” Ten Hag told the media, including ManUtd.com.
Everyone develops at their own pace. You look at Alejandro Garnacho who is already starting games as a young teenager. However, it does take some players longer. Jesse Lingard, for example, was certainly a late bloomer and there’s absolutely no shame in that.
Pellistri seems to be falling somewhere in the middle. He has the ability. It’s now about honing that talent and proving your worth.
Analysing Ten Hag’s body language, I’m going to assume that Pellistri will not be starting against Galatasaray tomorrow. I’d assume he’ll go with the more experienced Antony here, who is now back after missing the weekend game with a minor problem.
