Andre Onana is worried that he could lose his starting job at Man United if he heads to AFCON.
Let’s not beat around the bush. Manchester United’s Champions League failure has been largely down to Andre Onana. He has made some glaring errors in European football, including a couple of big ones yesterday.
The man from Cameroon was understandably deflated at full-time, looking pretty devastated with the way it played out. Those worries are seemingly sticking with him going forward.
The Guardian have provided the latest on that front. They state that the United player is ‘concerned’ he could lose his starting job at the club, if he heads to AFCON with his country in January.
Onana is ‘likely’ to be called up for Cameroon duty, which could cause him to miss four Premier League games for his club.
Waiting in the wings is Altay Bayindir, who is, by all accounts, doing well in training. No doubt Onana is seeing the Turk looking sharp up close and personal, meaning he could lose his starting berth.
I somewhat feel like Onana is overthinking it. That in itself is not a good thing, particularly for a goalkeeper.
Onana should do what he wants. If he desires playing at AFCON for his country. Do it. Play well and come back to Manchester brimming with confidence. If he’s not all that fussed, then that’s okay too.
From a selfish point of view, I hope he goes so we can get a closer look at Bayindir. Who knows, I can still see a scenario in which the Turk gets his chance before AFCON even comes around, which makes this whole story somewhat invalid.
