In the seventy years that the UEFA Champions League (previously known as the European Cup) has existed, no two teams have met each other more often than Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. In terms of titles and games played, Madrid are clear top dogs — but if there was ever a team that consistently challenged them on the international stage, it was Bayern.
That’s the reason why a German team has an iconic Spanish nickname — La Bestia Negra — the Black Beast. For a long time, Bayern Munich had the edge over Madrid in European competitions, much to the chagrin of Los Blancos. Recent results, however, have fallen short of the mythos, with Bayern Munich being knocked out by Madrid in their last three meetings.
Now, a very different Bayern team takes on this edition of Real Madrid. Coach Thomas Tuchel, armed with such names as Harry Kane, Jamal Musiala, Leroy Sané, and more — has one job. It’s a chance for the team to erase the disappointment of a terribly mediocre season. All they have to do is win.
It’s Bayern time.
