good morning!
Conan O’Brien has had a storied career at a writer on SNL and The Simpsons, a legendary late-night stint, and a podcast empire.
Now, he’s using that podcast empire (hello Conan O’Briend Needs a Fan) to begin his latest venture, Conan O’Brien Must Go.
According to Conan, the idea began when a couple of his fans in faraway places from Los Angeles invited Conan to visit their towns. And he shows up uninvited!
This finally answers the question why there was that Conan mural in Argentina. Because one of Conan’s fans commissioned the piece.
The series is four episodes long: Norway, Argentina, Thailand and Ireland.
And it features some very funny bits. My particular favourites are the music-making in Norway, Conan with Jordan Schlansky in Argentina, the face-slapping and rock climbing in Thailand, hunting for Bono in Dublin and a heart-warming moment in Ireland where Conan visits the land of his great-grandfather.
As funny and welcoming as this show is, there’s something missing. It took me a couple days to figure out what, but I think I know the answer.
There’s no one to act as Conan’s ‘foil’ or be an audience. Some of Conan’s best remotes featured a travel guide (like Steven Yeun, Schlansky, Gal Gadot, Flula Borg or his assistant Sona).
All these people served as Conan’s sidekick in one way or another and helped balance the comedy. It should be noted that almost every funny moment in Conan O’Brien Must Go involved him with one of his fans.
So, if there is a second series, I hope it is one where he spends more time with the fans he’s visiting. With a couple exemptions, the best moments from this show involved him having fun with his fans. They all balanced his humour very well.
I hope there’s a second season, and it has a lot of potential. Even though it wasn’t exactly the programme I was hoping for, Conan O’Brien is back on TV. And that’s always a good thing.
