Bayern Munich saw their last shot at silverware in this dreadful season disappear before their eyes as Real Madrid, with a bit of help, sunk the Rekordmeister in a heated Champions League semi-final affair. As with previous meetings with the team in white, officials once again decided the tie, something that Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel called out when Matthijs de Ligt’s putative equalizer was ruled out:
A disaster. An absolute disaster. With Real’s second goal, they let the play continue. The clear rule is that the scene must continue. The first mistake was made by the linesman, the second by the referee. It was a clear violation of the rules.

To help remind you of what happened, Madrid scored from an offside position (when have they not?) and the officials allowed the goal to stand; they did not even flag for offside. On the other hand, Bayern’s attack in the 13th minute of stoppage time wasn’t even allowed to finish as an apparent offside in the build-up was flagged. Polish referee Szymon Marciniak admitted that he made a mistake, but Tuchel said that does not help.
