Does Bayern Munich have too many center-backs? If you ask head coach Thomas Tuchel right now, the answer would probably be that it is not enough.
Somehow, the Bavarians are looking just a little short-handed as they round into the second leg of the Champions League semifinals against Real Madrid.
Former Tottenham star Eric Dier, who has been a revelation this Rückrunde for Bayern, picked up knocks in Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Stuttgart, and Dayot Upamecano was forced into action early as he recovers from his own injuries. And star Dutchman Matthijs de Ligt is still not training fully.
“He [De Ligt]’s trained individually today in Munich and will join team training tomorrow,” Tuchel said in an update after the Stuttgart result (via @iMiaSanMia). “Then we’ll see whether it’s enough for Wednesday.”
From the luxury of choosing among two excellent pairs of center-backs to just hoping to find enough healthy bodies for the biggest match of the season. Bayern could use a break from the injury gods — and not of the broken bone variety.
