Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has jumped to the defence of the ownership group and the amount of money they have spent so far building a whole brand new squad from top to bottom.
His side face Wolves this afternoon in the Premier League and anything less than a win at home will send the toxicity levels amongst the fan base to an all time high.
EXCLUSIVE! All the transfer deals, plans, and potential ins and outs that Chelsea actively worked on this January and why none of them happened!
Some will blame the manager, others will blame the players, and some will blame the board. But mostly. they will blame a mix of all three.
Fingers have been pointed firmly at the board recently for the amount of money they have spent since they have been at the club, and why that after more than 18 months in charge, they are still just sat in 10th position in the league.
No matter how anyone tries to dress that up or make excuses for it, that is far from good enough, especially after spending almost £1bn in three transfer windows.
But on the other side of that, the squad has been completely rebuilt from top to bottom, so of course it was always going to take time.
And that’s what Pochettino has picked up on, in words quoted by The Evening Standard.
On what is preventing such an expensively assembled squad from clicking, he said: “We have to stop using this excuse about the money.
“We are building a team for the future, of course, we are investing in players that for us we believe that they’re going to be for the next years to reach the level we expect.
“At the moment, we need to put it all in context, we need to put it all together, to build a team it’s not a magic touch.
“When you build a team with 16 or 17 new players, you need to all ask yourselves to look at all the circumstances from the beginning because it is easy to say ‘oh we spent money or we have amazing names’.
“Is Nkunku performing after seven months in the way that we want? No, why? Because we we are not so good at managing players? [no] It is because of the circumstances, but I am so calm and relaxed.”
