Everything we’re hearing today points to Mauricio Pochettino being safe as Chelsea manager – for now.
But this isn’t just because the owners believe in him, or because they’re too embarrassed to sack another coach. There may be a financial reason too. The Daily Mail are reporting that the cost of sacking the coach and his staff would cost more than £10m, digging us further into the hole we created by spending hundreds of millions on average players.
Their piece claims that any compensation package given to sacked coaches before next June would be put into this year’s accounts – something we really can’t afford to do, especially given the Premier League’s tough recent enforcement of their Profit and Sustainability rules.
As it stands, we need to sell tens of millions of pounds worth of players before that June cut-off to avoid punishment. That’s doable – but adding another £10m to the bill might make it impossible. Imagine a scenario where we’re selling one of our stars to pay off a manager who was sacked 6 months before. It sounds impossible, but this ownership has not stopped surprising us yet.
