Nizaar Kinsella’s piece in the Evening Standard today was pretty positive for Mauricio Pochettino, at least in terms of job security. It seems that the Chelsea hierarchy are desperate to avoid sacking him if they can, because of how badly it would reflect on them.
There are deeper problems mentioned in the piece however. While the squad are said to “largely back Pochettino,” it won’t last forever. Kinsella writes that “the atmosphere at Cobham has declined,” and we’re not surprised.
Just like last year, bad results breed bad vibes, which breed bad results. Pochettino appeared to be the perfect choice to turn the mood around and bring optimism back to the club, but even he will eventually become trapped in a death spiral of negativity if his players can’t get some decent results.
Players are said to be “struggling to gel on and off the field,” something which won’t surprise anyone who has seen our games this season. The overhaul of the squad means there is no chemistry on the pitch, and we’d imagine things are similar off it.
