Malo Gusto had a great game at right back for Chelsea last night, and after the gam he was interviewed by the club about what was a very impressive performance and a very important win.
The right back focused on the team’s “mentality” as the reason they’d been able to get the win away at a rowdy Villa Park against a strong Aston Villa team.
“I don’t know if it was our best game of the season, I would just say we are very happy and I hope we win more games and keep this mentality,” Gusto said on the club’s official website.
“The mentality today, all together, was very nice and that’s why we won. The most important thing is the collective performance, to keep this mentality to keep moving forward and win everything.
“We were very happy to show this mentality during the game. For sure we have to show more, to show a great mentality, to show our talent, because we are young and we know we need to improve in front of the fans.”
It seems unlikely that Gusto is making this all up off the top of his head – this is clearly the message that’s been drilled into these players.
It’s just a shame that the strong mentality and togetherness we saw in the game yesterday hasn’t been repeated more often. We’ve seen some of the weakest mentalities of any Chelsea team we can remember, as recently as a week ago, so you’ll forgive us to be a bit cautious before we start praising their newfound grit.
