Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness is not one to keep quiet when he’s got something on his mind, and this weekend he has been speaking about Chelsea’s big summer move.
After months of chasing him, the Blues eventually stumped up north of £100m for Moises Caicedo from Brighton, fighting off competition from Liverpool by simply writing a black cheque to the Seagulls.
In quotes picked up by Tribal Football, Hoeness has revealed that Bayern were also scouting the Ecuador star, but ended up backing out simply because of the price tag:
“The week before [watching Declan Rice play against Liverpool] I watched Caicedo.”
“I thought to myself: Spend 127 million euros on him? Others are welcome to do that. But FC Bayern will certainly never do that because it is simply too much money for us – regardless of the qualities of this player.
“We have an Aleksandar Pavlovic, who in my opinion can become a regular player at Bayern Munich in the future. He wouldn’t exist in the first team if we had bought a “flying six”, or whatever it’s called.”
Considering their status as a true European giant, Bayern are actually very cautious in their spending. They are a lot savvier than most Premier League teams, and tend to poach the best Bundesliga talent at a good price.
To be fair to him, Pavlovic is developing into what looks like a really good player. Chelsea could certainly learn a thing or two about not blocking the progress of their own youth prospects by buying from outside.
