Pundit Ally McCoist has given his thoughts on whether Chelsea should sack Mauricio Pochettino following the Blues 1-0 defeat to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.
Pochettino missed another chance to win his first trophy as a manager in England and it’s hard to see him getting a better opportunity to break his duck.
The Blues missed a number of big chances being conceding with just two minutes of extra time remaining as Virgil Van Dijk headed home from a corner.
The result has seen Chelsea come in for a lot of criticism but McCoist feels that it is not all completely warranted.
Speaking on talkSPORT he said: “No, I think you’ve got to stick, I do. I don’t think change is a necessity, I don’t.”
“What a chance they had to win a trophy.”
“At the same time, I’m more in the camp that I give Liverpool more praise than giving Chelsea stick if I’m honest with you.”
He added: “Could Chelsea have won it? They had chances to win it, their finishing was poor.”
“I mean the game could have gone either way, Liverpool’s disallowed goal, Jackson’s disallowed goal, which dear me, look how tight that was.”
“And then you’ve got Van Dijk’s header, the game was on a knife edge and it was a flick of the coin.”
“So, I’m certainly not going to be as critical of Chelsea and Pochettino as some of the pundits are. But, what an opportunity it was for him to get his first piece of silverware.”
The defeat will be hurt the Chelsea players but they don’t have long to pick themselves up as they host Leeds in the FA Cup fifth round on Wednesday evening.
