A source in Brazil is connecting Chelsea with interest in Matheus Goncalves, another sensationally talented Brazilian youngster.
The club have gone all out in the last two years trying to buy the best young talent out there, not that it’s helped the team much.
18 year old Goncalves has come through the fearsome Flamengo youth setup, and the attacking midfielder is just starting to make his impact on the first team after a loan to Bragantino last season.
There’s an £85m release clause in his contract, although that’s obviously very speculative. As we saw with the moves for players like Angelo Gabriel and Deivid Washington last summer, small fees can get the job done if you’re buying direct from Brazil.
We’re a long way off this one happening, but it’s an interesting name to keep in mind. The question is – do we have a pathway for these talents? How is Washington feeling about his move, 9 months on?
