Aston Villa vs Liverpool Date Change
The final home game of the 2023/24 season for Aston Villa was poised to be a joyous weekend event. By the time Aston Villa faced Liverpool at Villa Park on the weekend of May 11, there might have been an extended lap of appreciation under the daylight sun to celebrate a season that could have seen Villa qualify for Europe’s top tier tournament for the first time since the 1982/83 season. Additionally, it would have been a perfect send-off for the team to Athens, had they reached the final of the Europa Conference League.
Now, at less than five weeks notice, the Premier League and Sky Sports have moved the fixture to the Monday night on May 13 for broadcasting on Sky at 8pm.
Now such a post-match ceremony will take place at around 10pm, when fans will be itching to get back home with work the next day, or to grab last orders. Plus, it’s a school night.
Not ideal.
I’m sure the Liverpool away fans making the effort to go to Villa Park would have liked to have given Jürgen Klopp a proper send off too, considering it will be his last away game in charge in the Premier League. Instead, they’ll be more concerned about trying to get back home in the early hours.
While it was inevitable that the game would be picked for a broadcast, surely a weekend slot would have been better for match-going fans and for it as a TV spectacle as well?
