The 21-year-old Spaniard has become a prime target for Mikel Arteta’s side, who are looking to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the new season.
Arsenal is reportedly ready to activate the €50 million release clause for Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, intensifying their pursuit of the Spaniard.
This potential move matches with recent reports suggesting that Arsenal is prioritising the signing of a new winger this summer. The decision to focus on a wide player is partly influenced by Kai Havertz‘s form, which has prompted the Gunners to reconsider their previous emphasis on a centre-forward.
According to multiple sources, Arsenal has long been interested in adding depth and competition to their wide forward positions. While Pedro Neto of Wolves was initially considered, his injury record and high price tag have made a deal less likely.
Nico Williams, on the other hand, has emerged as a favoured option for Arsenal. The young winger has enjoyed a breakout season with Athletic Club, recording eight goals and 17 assists in 37 appearances across all competitions. His impressive performances have also attracted interest from Chelsea, Barcelona, and PSG.
Arsenal‘s willingness to trigger Williams‘ €50 million release clause could be a decisive factor in securing his signature, although PSG are reportedly prepared to do the same.
Williams primarily plays on the left wing, a position currently occupied by Gabriel Martinelli. However, manager Mikel Arteta recently experimented with Martinelli on the right wing, where he excelled. This tactical shift could open up space for Williams on the left, while both players could rotate with Bukayo Saka on the right, providing valuable rest for the England international.
With Williams‘ contract at Athletic Club running until 2027, the club seems to be anticipating his departure, having already signed Alvaro Djalo from Braga as a potential replacement.
