BFW Postseason Breakdown: Bayern Munich’s Best Defensive Player
Despite some lapses, this was an interesting campaign for Bayern Munich’s backline. There were a few players who were awesome and some others who were disappointing. The interesting part of this will be to see how everyone lands on this…let’s go!
Chuck: This came down to three players for me: Joshua Kimmich, Matthijs de Ligt, and Eric Dier. Kimmich’s move to right-back was an enigma for the team and vaulted the squad’s quality to another level. Eric Dier came in at midseason and was a beast, but De Ligt had to fight several battles. Aside of a couple of injuries, De Ligt was publicly criticized by Thomas Tuchel, benched, and then rose from the ashes to once again show why he is a world class defender — and that’s why he got my vote. Selection: Matthijs de Ligt.
zippy: Recency bias is real and there are many deserving candidates with no slam dunk pick. Having given strong consideration to the monster of the Hinrunde, Kim Min-jae, I am going to go with Joshua Kimmich — who only ended up in the backline in the second half of the season. But Bayern’s embattled No. 6 locked down the right-back position with effortless ease, lifting his team to its best phase of play all year. Selection: Joshua Kimmich.
Frank: Who would have thought that a much maligned transfer from Tottenham would become Bayern’s most indispensable defender? While Thomas Tuchel occasionally felt it was all right to sub off any other defender, even Joshua Kimmich, Eric Dier stayed on the field as long as possible. The defender, who just about everybody wrote off as a distant fourth choice option at center back, impressed with his leadership, confidence in possession and intelligent defensive decision in a backline that had a tendency to implode. Selection: Eric Dier.
RIPLT: Whoever authorized the signing of Eric Dier from Spurs caught flak from many fans, because why would you sign a fourth CB (which was his position in the pecking order at Tottenham) when you already have three? Not long after, you’re starting to see stats like “least times dribbled past“ or “MOTM in Arsenal FC manager Mikel Arteta’s biggest Champions League game“. He’s a “sleeper“ in a way, in the sense that he surprised the fans and that people were sleeping on how good he is. Selection: Eric Dier.
Dasher: I think this belongs, without a doubt to Eric Dier. Bayern went into the season with three world class defenders, and came out of it with all three being rotated to play alongside Eric Dier, the undisputed starter. There were a lot of defensive injuries the club has to suffer this season, but Dier surprised everyone as he delivered world class performances while (literally) bleeding for FC Bayern. Selection: Eric Dier.
