BFW Postseason Breakdown: Bayern Munich’s Most Valuable Player
In a season that was full of drama, there were many highs and many lows, but there were several players who were a constant.
Let’s take a look at where some of the BFW staffers came out on Bayern Munich’s MVP…then you can give us your vote!
Chuck: When it comes to “value”, there were several players who really stepped up this season to lead the team. Harry Kane was stalwart in attack, Aleksandar Pavlović emerged as a force in the midfield, Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka each showed why their versatility and adaptability is a plus, Leroy Sané had a smashing start to the season, matthijs de Ligt and Eric Dier were sensational on the backline, and Manuel Neuer (until a couple of late season mistakes) was a monster in goal. In the end, though, it came down to two players for me — Kane and De Ligt. Kane was just a force of nature, but we saw just how much De Ligt mean to the squad when the lights were brightest. In the end, I went with Kane by a hair, mostly because we saw what not having a top-tier striker looked like last season…and it was not great (though it did produce one more trophy). Selection: Harry Kane.
zippy: This was Bayern’s most trying season in recent memory by a wide margin. The Rekordmeister is in transition. An old guard is fading and the glaring mistakes of recent years have been laid bare. Amid all the turmoil, I’m not sure the team gets through this in one piece without the leadership of Thomas Müller. The Raumdeuter’s best years are behind him, but he has accepted his reserve role without complaint — and consistently set the tone and the example for the squad as they weathered poor results and media firestorms. When he did get the chance to play he showed he still has it — but this is about his impact off the field. Seasons like this can go off the rails without guys like Müller steadying the ship. Selection: Thomas Müller.
Frank: The obvious selection would be Harry Kane, so I am not going with him. Instead, my pick is Manuel Neuer. Value is not just determined by a player’s excellence but also by the player’s impact on the rest of the squad and what it loses without him there. Manuel Neuer missed the first couple of months of the season through a terrible injury, with many fans clamoring to have him replaced as Ulreich proved himself unable to inspire total trust in the defenders in front of him. As per usual, Manuel Neuer immediately reasserted that aura of confidence in the defenders around him as if he had never left. This was not a dominant season by Neuer, but the effect he had on the players around him made so much of a difference. Who else could come up with that chipped pass over the attacker in the build up to Bayern’s second goal in the first leg against Arsenal? Selection: Manuel Neuer.
RIPLT: When I hear the word “value“, I think quality and to an extent efficiency. In what was a dire season for Bayern, one man made sure that it wasn’t a complete waste. Harry Kane simply blew everyone away with his seamless transition from English football to German football. I’ve said this a lot in the past, but he was the bright spot in this dogged team. Selection: Harry Kane.
