It has been reported several times that, while Bayern Munich’s Director of Sport Max Eberl and sporting director Christoph Freund were convinced that Vincent Kompany would be a good choice as new head coach at Bayern Munich, the higher ups beg to differ on just how convincing a hire he is. These are just reports, of course, but legendary former CEO and current member of the supervisory board Karl-Heinz Rummenigge did little dispel such a notion with some rather testy quotes on the new coach when speaking to BILD, as captured by @iMiaSanMia.
“I wish him much success, because when you don’t win a title for a year as Bayern Munich, that’s already one year too many. I haven’t met him yet. He came last Wednesday, but unfortunately I wasn’t in the country because I had an appointment in Italy. Max Eberl is convinced of this relatively young and not very experienced man.”
Ouch. It is important not to read too much into certain quotes, but they certainly seem to deliver a frosty message. Fortunately, Rummenigge does not want to dwell on the uncertainties of the appointment and recognizes multiple positive qualities in the former Hamburg SV player.
“I think he stands for the right philosophy. I asked [Manchester City manager] Pep Guardiola, who had him as a player for a long time. He said he’s convinced that he is an exciting coach. We must not forget that Bayern plays relatively attacking and dominant football. He stands for this philosophy.”
Furthermore, Rummenigge believes Kompany is well acquainted to the kind of pressure that comes with trying to win a title: “He played football at Manchester City. They know what pressure is.”
It is fair to say that Rummenigge is not yet convinced by the hiring of Kompany, but equally it seems that he is giving the former Burnley coach the chance to impress before he truly makes up his mind.
