Bayern Munich legend Manuel Neuer made one or two high-profile gaffes this season, including one against Real Madrid, which has brought his position into question with the German national team; however, his goalkeeping coach, Michael Rechner believes that the debate surrounding Neuer is a bit superficial (@SZ, @iMiaSanMia):

Here is the tweet in full:
Bayern’s goalkeeping coach Michael Rechner on the discussions around Manuel Neuer: “I think the debate is a bit superficial. Until recently, Manu was celebrated for his comeback and for regaining his old level of performance after such a serious injury. And now, all of a sudden, the discussion is only about a few scenes in which he didn’t look entirely fortunate. You should evaluate the entire game. Against Real in particular there were three or four incredible saves, and anyone could see that Manu is world class, just like always. Without this one scene, everyone will be talking about the supernatural Manuel Neuer, who made inhumanly good saves. In fact, all the data supports that. Just one example: last season he had an incredibly good number for the so-called big saves. I am also certain that if this scene didn’t happen in Madrid, then no one would be talking about the goal in the friendly against Ukraine”
Neuer did make some wonderful saves this season and continues to be one of the best keepers in the world. Perhaps, during the course of EURO 2024, he will remind the world of his excellence once more.
