Way back in 2007, swarths of people began switching from the iconic Nokia 3210 to the new iPhone.
And now we could be about to see an even bigger upgrade than that at West Ham United.
Julen Lopetegui is set to embark on an exciting new area at the London Stadium, after boldly suggesting that the Hammers are ‘the only club in London’.
The Spaniard will be fully aware of the size of the task that faces him, with David Moyes having left behind an ageing and unbalanced squad in urgent need of attention.
Lopetegui is said to be prioritising the additions of a new high quality centre-back and a top-class, proven striker this summer.
Those two positions are undoubtedly the ones in most urgent need of action, but it could be argued that the Hammers boss actually needs to strengthen every single department of his squad.
Certainly if he is to guide us back inside the European places, more competition and cover is required all over the pitch.
Both full-back positions need to be improved upon. West Ham have absolutely no depth on either side of the pitch at left and right-back.
That could all be about to change this summer though…
West Ham set for the biggest upgrade since Nokia 3210 to iPhone
Lopetegui seems to be set to go all out to strengthen his right-back ranks at the London Stadium this summer.
Vladimir Coufal has been a solid performer for the Hammers over the past three-and-a-half years.
However, he clearly regressed during the second half of last season, and I don’t think he’s good enough to be playing for a Premier League team who are pushing for the top seven places.
It was recently suggested that the former Slavia Prague defender could be set to join Galatasaray this summer as well.
A big upgrade is required on the Czech Republic international, and Southampton’s Kyle Walker-Peters is apparently the man who could come in and replace him.
The Hammers were actually linked with a move to sign him back in January but he remained at St Mary’s in the end.
Hopefully this time around we’ll have more luck.
The 27-year-old Saints ace would be the perfect long-term replacement for Vlad, and a huge upgrade at the same time.
The former Tottenham star has been a revelation for Southampton since moving to St Mary’s in 2020.
Dele Alli raved about Walker-Peters when they were both at Tottenham, and labelled him as a ‘fantastic player’ (Sky Sports), and he’s got even better since then as well!
He possesses absolutely blistering pace, is a fine tackler and offers a real threat going forward as well.
In 46 Championship appearances for Southampton last season, Walker-Peters bagged two goals and four assists. During those outings, he averaged 1.8 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and 1.2 clearances per game. (Who Scored).
The Southampton defender would add some real pace and explosiveness down our right hand side, and the thought of him overlapping around the outside of Jarrod Bowen is an incredibly exciting one.
The skillset that the Saints ace possesses is on another level entirely to Coufal’s.
Switching from the Nokia 3210 to the new iPhone 17 years ago might have been one of the biggest upgrades we’ve seen in modern times.
However, Walker-Peters replacing Vladimir Coufal at West Ham may well top it.
