Man United seem to be closing in on a move to sign Matthijs de Ligt.
Manchester United have been linked with many central defenders this summer, as Erik ten Hag looks to fill the void left by Raphael Varane.
It felt like Jarrad Branthwaite was the main target for the Old Trafford club, though the Reds could well be priced out of that move, with Everton demanding around £70m. Attention then turned to Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt.
The Dutchman has spent a couple of years at Bayern Munich, though Jonathan Tah is incoming and the 24-year-old is now likely to move on, with United keen.
Fabrizio Romano has provided the latest information on that front via his YouTube channel. He has confirmed United have been given the ‘green light’ over the signing of the defender.
On top of that, the player himself ‘wants to go’ to the Reds this summer.
For now, talks between United and Bayern will continue, with the main focus surrounding the structure of the deal.
To me, this feels like a matter of ‘when’ a deal is struck rather than ‘if’ a deal will be struck. Both sides seem to want this move to happen which is good news for fans of De Ligt.
As a partner for Lisandro Martinez, the Dutchman feels like the perfect complement, though United will be somewhat wary about his injury issues.
If a deal can be struck for around the £40m mark, this would represent an excellent piece of business by INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who have made it no secret that they’re trying to get better when it comes to buying and selling.
