The Vincent Kompany era at Bayern Munich has begun. With players returning from vacation, preparation for the season is in full stride as Bayern Munich will be hungry to get silverware back in the cabinets. Kompany has had some interesting things to say in how we will approach the position.
Kompany made an extremely bold statement by claiming that Bayern doesn’t talk about systems anymore. Kompany added that coaches and players need to be flexible to play different systems based on the opponent.
“I don’t think we talk about systems anymore. The Bundesliga is a very, very good league and it’s an example of how flexible coaches are, players are able to play different systems. It will depend on the opponent. We know the profiles of our players and their best positions. We’ll stay aligned to that as much as we can,” Kompany said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
While everyone can agree that flexibility is important, surely it doesn’t make sense to have a main approach and system to the team. Hansi Flick had one of the most successful stints as a Bayern manager ever and he had a very clear system, despite its risks and flaws.
Flexibility is essential, but does this mean Bayern will have no clear identity or system? Expect absolutely anything to happen on the pitch each match? It is hard to see that this is a proper approach. Surely the team needs a system to built upon and prepare for their strongest opponents.
It is already looking like Kompany will change the way we look at football entirely, or last three months. Regardless, it is certainly a unique era for the Bavarian giants.
