Bayern Munich’s Germany contingent have finally returned to Sabener Straße after extended time off from their excursions with the national team at EURO 2024. They have gone through their medical and fitness tests ahead of beginning their preparations for the 2024/25 season under new manager Vincent Kompany and the club is getting set to jet off to South Korea for the Audi Summer Tour.
While in South Korea, Bayern will play two friendlies against Tottenham Hotspur, and then only a friendly against WSG Tirol stands between them and the start of competitive matches starting with the trip to SSV Ulm for their first round of the DFB-Pokal.
While most of Bayern’s internationals are arriving back in Munich, Leroy Sané is one player from the Germany contingent that will not be starting regular training at the same time as the rest of them. The winger is still recovering from a groin surgery to repair what had been a recurring injury during the latter stages of last season. Per information from Bild (via @iMiaSanMia), he was still with the other arrivals in Munich for their medical tests despite his injury and fitness status.
Sané had the operation shortly after Germany was knocked out of the Euros by Spain in order to give himself as much time as possible to fully recover ahead of the upcoming season. Towards the end of last season when Bayern was making a push to reach the Champions League final, Thomas Tuchel and the club’s coaching staff had made the decision to be incredibly delicate with Sané’s training minutes to ensure he would be as fresh as possible for the matches, but he has really needed the surgery for a while now. He was not in the squad for a handful of Bayern’s Bundesliga matches in and around the Champions League matches against both Arsenal and Real Madrid.
In total, Sané missed a total of six Bundesliga matches at the end of last season due to his injury problem, so it is paramount for Vincent Kompany and Bayern to make sure he fully recovers and is fully fit before any unnecessary risks are taken.
