- Newcastle are reportedly on course to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace
- Talks are ongoing as part of a deal that could be worth in excess of £60million
- 24-year-old made 25 Premier League appearances for The Eagles last season
Newcastle are reportedly in advanced talks to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.
Guehi was a consistently strong performer in a Palace side that looked to be in danger of a relegation battle last season before Oliver Glasner‘s arrival at the club.
The 24-year-old captained the side on occasion and recovered from a knee injury that curtailed much of the latter part of his campaign to be named in Gareth Southgate‘s side for Euro 2024.
After an injury saw Harry Maguire miss out on England’s final 26-man squad, Guehi established himself as the preferred partner for John Stones and was key component as England reached the final.
According to a report from The Telegraph, Guehi’s future may well be away from Selhurst Park with Newcastle close to finalising a deal said to be worth in excess of £60million.
Newcastle are reportedly close to agreeing a deal to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace
The England defender is reportedly keen on the move which is said to worth more than £60m
Personal terms are reportedly net set to prove to be a problem in the deal getting over the line, with Guehi said to be keen on joining Eddie Howe’s side this summer.
It is understood that talks are progressing with confirmation believed to be on course for later this week.
The move for Guehi serves as a statement of intent from the Magpies after Howe cast doubt over his future at the club following a major overhaul of the club’s backroom staff.
After Southgate stepped away from his role with England the former Bournemouth boss was instantly installed as one of the bookmakers’ favourites to replace him in the hot seat.
Howe then sent speculation into overdrive by expressing concerns about his ability to continue at St James’ Park insisting there was ‘no point’ in him remaining at the club if his relationship if his ‘dynamic’ with the hierarchy wasn’t right.
Crisis talks reportedly ensued where Howe is said to have received assurances from the club that he will retain a leading role in the club’s recruitment and that funds will be available for him to strengthen his side.
The move would represent a major coup for Eddie Howe’s side and could be completed by the weekend
Should Guehi agree to a move to St James’ Park he would join Odysseas Vlachodimos, Lloyd Kelly, Lewis Hall, John Ruddy and Miodrag Pivas’ as the club’s new arrivals this summer.
Newcastle return to competitive action when they play host to Southampton in their Premier League opener next Saturday.
