Bayern Munich is a club with very special standards. Having just come off a trophyless season — arguably the worst since dark days of Jurgen Klinsmann — the CEO has a simple task set for the new coach and his staff.
Just make the Champions League final! Yes, that’s right.

Jan-Christian Dreesen on Bayern’s goals for this season: “The league title is the most honest title, that’s what Karl-Heinz always said, and he’s right. We know that we have strong competition and that the route to the trophy is always the longest. But that is our goal, just like every season. We won’t back down from that. That wouldn’t suit FC Bayern.
It’s a special season in the Champions League, not only because of the new format, but above all because the final is taking place in Munich again after over a decade. We were very close to reaching the final last season, and in 2012 our Wembley generation already had one hand on the trophy in our Allianz Arena. Of course, our fans dream of a final at home again, just like us.”
Fans would definitely like a final at home again, ideally one that ends better than the last one did (we don’t talk about it). Still, those are some high expectations to place on the shoulders of Vincent Kompany, especially given the state of the squad he’s inherited from Thomas Tuchel.
On the other hand, Bayern Munich were just ten minutes away from beating Real Madrid in their own stadium last season’s UCL semis, and could’ve won the CL (or at least made the final in Wembley) if not for some untimely injuries and questionable refereeing. So, if that’s an example of what this team can do at a low point, then there’s plenty of potential to achieve great things this season.
It’s just a matter of living up to expectations.
