There have been a lot of moving parts in the summer transfer window thus far as Bayern Munich prepares to regain silverware under Vincent Kompany after going trophy-less last season for the first time in over a decade. As of yet, the club has still only brought in three players in addition to getting Josip Stanišić back from his loan spell at Bayer Leverkusen, but sporting director Christoph Freund has alluded to the fact that there will still be more business done before the end of this month, provided the club is also able to sell some players to help balance their books.
Bryan Zaragoza is set to be loaned out to Valencia in La Liga and Noussair Mazraoui is set to join Manchester United before the window closes as the Premier League club started to get cold feet with Matthijs de Ligt. Other than that small list of potential outbounds, though, there really are not lined up sales for this summer Bayern has lined up at the moment. Of course, Joshua Kimmich’s future at the club was uncertain going into this summer’s window, but is now looking far more secured for the veteran Bayern midfielder turned right back.
Per information from both Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg (via @iMiaSanMia) and Sport Bild’s Tobi Altschäffl (via @iMiaSanMia), Kimmich is almost certain to remain a Bayern player this summer and sign a contract extension with the club. The player himself is not interested in a move to the reigning Ligue 1 Champions, despite the concrete interest the club has shown in trying to sign him this summer in the wake of offloading Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid.
Had the right offer come in for Kimmich and had he also been open to leaving, Bayern could have, in theory, been open to letting him go this summer, but none of those criteria came close to being fulfilled. Instead, the club is now working towards a solution with one of the most key players in the squad, who’s current contract is set to expire next summer. They do not want to be in a situation where he is entering the final year on his contract with his future unresolved, running the risk of losing yet another player on a free transfer a la David Alaba to Real Madrid a few summers ago, with the same fortune potentially being the case for Alphonso Davies next summer.
As things stand right now, Kimmich and the club have agreed to wait until the start of the season to enter contact extension discussions so the player can focus on preseason under new manager Vincent Kompany for the time being. We are not long now from Bayern’s first competitive match of the season in the form of a first round DFB-Pokal trip to take on SSV Ulm on August 16th. Only two friendlies remain in between now and that trip to Baden-Württemberg.
