Bayern Munich has added one exciting attacker player this transfer window in Michael Olise. But there was apparent interest in adding another — it just did not pan out that way.
The Bavarians were linked to another player in either the wings or attacking midfield ranks — which might raise eyebrows given the number of players Bayern already has there.
In the end, Dani Olmo (FC Barcelona), Xavi Simons (RB Leipzig again, on a second loan from Paris Saint-Germain), and Désiré Doué (Paris Saint-Germain) all opted for different clubs. Now a report from Sport Bild details just how close Olmo came to joining Bayern.
Via @iMiaSanMia:
Dani Olmo was one of three attacking candidates for Bayern alongside Xavi Simons and Désiré Doué. Before he joined Barcelona, there was contact between Bayern and Olmo – and then his management came back to contact Bayern again, but there was no feedback and no more interest from the club [@altobelli13, @cfbayern]
So Bayern might have had another way back in — if they wanted to. But the Bavarians were still chasing Doué and let Olmo go. And after enduring a weird registration saga, Olmo scored the winner for Hansi Flick’s Barça at Rayo Vallecano this week.
With the Bavarians drawing Barça in this year’s Champions League, he will have a chance to strike a dagger into our hearts a second time this year — after doing so for Spain against Germany at EURO 2024.
