Julen Lopetegui and Tim Steidten worked wonders for West Ham United during the summer transfer window.
However, the Spaniard and the German were by no means faultless in their work.
Tim Steidten was given the keys to the castle by the Hammers board this summer, as the West Ham director of football was put solely in charge of player recruitment.
Julen Lopetegui would have given Tim certain player profiles he was after, and the 45-year-old would then have gone out and identified targets.
West Ham brought nine new players in, whilst 12 left the London Stadium on a mixture of permanent deals, loan moves and free transfers.
As a whole, the Hammers fanbase were delighted with the transfer business conducted by the club.
However, there were one or two bizarre decisions from Lopetegui and Steidten as far as I’m concerned.
Julen Lopetegui and Tim Stediten’s £25m West Ham mistake laid bare
Whilst the Hammers fans were rejoicing some of the summer signings including the likes of Jean-Clair Todibo, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Crysencio Summerville, there was some trepidation about one of them in particular.
Luis Guilherme joined West Ham from Palmeiras for around £25 million in the summer, he was our first signing of the window in fact.
He featured during pre-season, but has not played a single competitive minute for the senior side yet.
The 18-year-old is clearly a hugely talented young player, but his continual omissions from the match-day squads have raised some eyebrows.
It’s not just that though.
He hasn’t even been seen in the under-21 match-day squads either. Many Hammers fans noticed the fact that Guilherme was nowhere to be seen when our squad list was released for the EFL Cup clash with Newport County last night.
Bizarre Luis Guilherme decision
It’s not so much that i don’t think Luis Guilherme is a talented player.
Time will tell as to whether he’s good enough to reach the top or not.
However, I do feel like Julen Lopetegui and Tim Steidten should have prioritised the signing of a rapid young striker or a pacy left-back, over bring Luis Guilherme to West Ham.
Now that they made the decision to sign him though, why is he being given no competitive football?
Fair enough if he’s not at the required standard to be playing Premier League football just yet, but to not be given any minutes for the under-21s is just bizarre isn’t it?
I think so, and it will be very interesting to see whether that changes over the next few weeks and months.
Surely a loan back to Palmeiras for the season would have been better for his development?
