Everton have reached rock bottom and speculation has been growing over the possible return of David Moyes after his West Ham departure.
David Moyes is out of work after West Ham decided to go in a different direction with Julen Lopetegui.
In the eyes of many the former Everton boss was as good as it could ever get for West Ham.
Everton’s plight has even been used as an example of that in debates on the subject.
Lopetegui is tasked with proving that isn’t the case for West Ham.
Although Sean Dyche and the current owners are not making a convincing case that there is a next level after Moyes.
Hammers fans who called for change in the summer were warned ad nauseum to ‘be careful what you wish for’.
Those supporters posed the question in response that if Moyes is so highly thought of and coveted, then which clubs were waiting to snap him up when he left West Ham?
Moyes did a marvellous job in east London.
He led West Ham to their record ever Premier League points total, into Europe for three consecutive seasons.
Everton fan reaction to growing Moyes rumours
And of course ended the club’s 43-year major trophy drought.
His risk averse style had eventually made a parting of the ways the only option.
Moyes was been linked with the Wales and Scotland jobs and there was fleeting speculation he might join Leicester before Steve Cooper was appointed.
It is a big return to Everton that has been gathering increasingly momentum on the rumour mill, though.
Pressure has been building on Dyche as the Toffees hit rock bottom. Quite literally.
Everton have officially had the worst start to a season in all of Europe.
That has led to claims on the football grapevine that Everton could bring Moyes back to Goodison for the final season there.
In many ways it would be quite fitting. Almost a football no-brainer.
They say desperate times call for desperate measures. Given Everton’s predicament one might think Moyes would be welcomed back with open arms.
But Everton fan reaction to growing Moyes rumours proves West Ham were right.
West Ham proved right as Toffees turn their noses up
West Ham fans were roundly criticised for daring to want to see a better brand of football and more entertainment.
Well judging by comments from many Toffees fans nothing could be further from the truth.
Everton were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Southampton in midweek.
In the wake of that latest defeat, popular Everton X account EFC Daily posed the question: “Would you be happy if David Moyes was to return to Everton?”
Many of the responses will chime with West Ham fans who had called for the end of the Moyes era.
There were of course some Everton fans who said they would take the Scot back.
Far more were against the idea, though, with many citing that they were unimpressed by what they saw from West Ham in recent seasons as evidence.
One Everton fan even states that West Ham only earned a few more points than the Toffees last season – without the points deduction – despite the Hammers have a team “20 times better”.
Here are a selection of responses from Everton fans about whether they’d take Moyes back following his departure from West Ham:
Souness flipped the argument on its head, stating that perhaps West Ham will be as good as it gets for Moyes.
Judging by this, maybe he is right.
And it seems West Ham were right to move on.
