Guillem Balague has just launched a shameless and quite frankly childish defence of West Ham Unitd head coach Julen Lopetegui.
Julen Lopetegui looked incredibly frustrated on the sidelines today, as Chelsea ran rampant against West Ham at the London Stadium.
Things are looking pretty bleak for the Spaniard right now. There are plenty of Hammers fans who are being proven right about Lopetegui’s credentials at the moment.
However, Guillem Balgaue is someone who has staunchly supported Lopetegui right from the very start.
Back in the summer, the Spaniard didn’t stop telling us how brilliant his countryman is.
It got to a point where Balague was so bullish with his praise of Lopetegui that everyone started to believe that the Hammers were on to something special.
However, as things stand, his continued support of the West Ham boss seems to lack any kind of substance.
Guillem Balgue blocks replies to bizarre Julen Lopetegui post
The 58-year-old Hammers boss will surely be feeling the heat now after that shambolic performance from his players against Chelsea.
It was a disaster from start to finish today, and it’s fair for fans and pundits to be asking questions of Lopetegui already.
However, one man clearly doesn’t agree with that sentiment!
Well-renowned Spanish football pundit Guillem Balague took to his official X account this afternoon to launch a shameless defence of Lopetegui.
Balague tweeted:
“It is the perfect time to say this, now that the wind (and the pusillanimous that can’t see further than their nose) is going against him Julen Lopetegui is a top top top manager and will show it at West Ham. Message to those that understand football: look beyond the bench to understand the poor start to the season You don’t get chosen as a Spain national coach AND Real Madrid manager, and win the Europa League unless you are absolutely top. He did an absolutely superb job at Wolves (and then the ownership lied to him three times so couldn’t stay as trust was gone) Bookmark this message for me please.“
“No replies allowed because I don’t really care what those that cannot see it think.“
Now, we all know that Balague is a big fan of Lopetegui, but that post above reeks of someone who has lost their argument already.
Balague wildly misses the point with Lopetegui defence
Firstly, I have to say that Lopetegui deserves time before he is judged properly by the Hammers fans, and the owners of course.
However, he’s certainly not immune from criticism, and I believe he’d be the first to admit that he’s already made mistakes at the London Stadium.
Balague just seems so set in his views though, and tunnel visioned, that he can’t even accept any form of criticism of his countryman.
The Spanish football pundit keeps going on about the 58-year-old having managed Real Madrid and Spain before.
However, let’s provide some context. He was in charge of Madrid for just 14 games before being sacked and Spain for only 20 games before he was moved on.
He clearly wasn’t good enough to hold down those two jobs.
That said, I’m prepared to be patient with the Spaniard. Let’s see how things look after 15 games. He has a lot of work to do for sure, and Balague should be more accepting of the criticism that his countryman is getting.
Let’s put things into perspective though. There was a huge overhaul of players at the London Stadium in the summer, and it will take time for everything to click.
If we’re anywhere near the relegation zone heading into the new year though, even Balague will surely have to admit that Lopetegui isn’t quite the manager he thinks he is.
