Information can be scarce at London Stadium when the game is in full swing. The vast distance between the upper tier and the action often leaves fans wondering who is warming up or who might be substituted next. It is almost impossible to see what is on the 4th officials board so substitutions tend to be much debated whilst everyone begins squinting at the big screen for reference.
This was evident when Guido Rodriguez was replaced by Tomas Soucek in the first half against Chelsea. While viewers at home might have been aware of an injury or some ulterior reason, fans at the stadium had to accept the change at face value, assuming Rodriguez was substituted because he couldn’t keep up with the pace of the game.
Guido wasn’t the only slow player, but he symbolised a sluggish West Ham team that seemed to be running through treacle. There were exceptions like Mohammed Kudus and Summerville in the first half, but generally, the visitors were much quicker and it’s becoming a concerning theme.
This recurring issue, also evident against teams like Bournemouth, Villa, Palace, and Fulham, presents a significant challenge for West Ham head coach Julen Lopetegui.
Keeping the impressive Crysencio Summerville in the team will help, as will the inclusion of Jean Clair Todibo but it may require more than just that. With the Premier League faster than ever, it’s crucial for the team to add the much-needed athleticism to compete effectively.
