West Ham United were dismantled by Chelsea in the Premier League at the London Stadium on Saturday.
The 3-0 Premier League defeat to Chelsea was a really tough one to swallow for everyone involved with West Ham United.
Julen Lopetegui cut a forlorn figure on the touchline at the London Stadium yesterday, and David Sullivan and Karren Brady looked far from happy in the stands.
The West Ham head coach made a series of questionable decisions during yesterday’s game.
One was the fact that he hauled Guido Rodriguez off after 37 minutes. I’m not saying that the Argentina international was good yesterday, but that really was a strange move – one that could really damage the 30-year-old’s confidence.
Then there was Lopetegui’s bizarre decision to completely ignore Danny Ings on the bench, after the 32-year-old’s heroics away at Fulham last weekend.
However, there was a another call the 58-year-old made that was worse that both of those two put together in my opinion.
West Ham starter vs Chelsea will be fuming with Julen Lopetegui
The Hammers put in a truly dreadful performance as a team yesterday.
And there were a whole host of shocking individual displays as well.
Things are looking pretty bad for West Ham right now, but Crysencio Summerville was one of the rare positives during our defeat to Chelsea.
He showed real energy, pace, great movement and desire to try and make things happen.
The winger was incredibly unlucky not to be awarded a penalty inside the first-half when he was brought down inside the box by Wesley Fofana.
In spite of all of that though, Lopetegui decided to replace him with Michail Antonio, just nine minutes into the second-half.
It was an utterly mind-boggling decision from the Spaniard – one that has intensified the pressure on him even more so.
Crysencio Summerville must be scratching his head
The 22-year-old winger joined the Hammers from Leeds United for around £20 million in the summer transfer window.
Summerville chose to join West Ham on the premise that he would receive regular game-time under Lopetegui.
However, that hasn’t happened yet.
In fact, the Dutchman has been given just one Premier League start by Lopetegui so far – Saturday’s clash with Chelsea.
As far as I’m concerned, he was one of our better players yesterday, and he certainly didn’t deserve to get hooked at 54 minutes.
Crysencio Summerville must be wondering what on earth is going on at West Ham right now. Does Lopetegui simply not fancy him?
Or is he easing him into action slowly? Either way, he shouldn’t have taken him off yesterday – there were at least five players who should have been hooked before the former Leeds man in my opinion.
