West Ham United centre-back Max Kilman addressed the media after our shocking 3-0 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday.
And what Max Kilman told reporters blew my mind.
West Ham were atrocious from start to finish against Chelsea at the London Stadium, and Julen Lopetegui has faced some really tough questions in the aftermath of the 3-0 defeat…rightly so.
Kilman wasn’t anywhere near his best against the Blues, but he has actually been our best and most consistent player this season in general.
The 27-year-old was a hugely important signing for the Hammers in the summer, and Lopetegui even considered making him the club captain, before eventually handing the armband to Jarrod Bowen.
However, he was well below the standards that he has set for himself yesterday.
That’s fine, everyone has off days, but it’s what he said after the game that really shocked me.
Max Kilman makes admission about 3-0 West Ham defeat
Sometimes players say things meaning to come across well intentioned, but it just doesn’t work out that way.
And Kilman fell into that trap yesterday in my opinion.
The former Wolves man faced up the press after Chelsea served us up a 3-0 defeat on our home turf.
Kilman made a staggering admission, when speaking to WHUFC.com.
He said, “Honestly, we weren’t good enough. We’ve got a lot to improve on, and hopefully this will be a wake up call for us because we’re a much better team [than we’re showing] and we can do much better. So hopefully it’s going to give us a big boost, and we’re going to come back and make sure we’re better.“
I’m sorry, but that’s just not good enough in my opinion.
A wake up call? Like we haven’t had enough of them this season.
I would have preferred it if he was honest and just admitted that he and his teammates weren’t up for it.
We all know they were nowhere near good enough yesterday, but what was the real reason?
Were the players simply not hungry enough? Were Lopetegui’s tactics not up to scratch? Or were Chelsea just too good?
I think it was probably a mixture of all of those things. However, to suggest that it was a ‘wake up call’ was just patronising as far as I’m concerned.
There have been plenty of occasions this season already when the West Ham players should have learnt valuable lessons.
I expect a big reaction from Max Kilman and his teammates up at Anfield on Wednesday night.
