West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen gave a damning appraisal of the team’s 3-0 defeat to Chelsea yesterday when asked if the players had the wrong mentality throughout the match.
The Hammers were never in the race against Enzo Maresca’s side, who found it all too easy to dismantle Julen Lopetegui’s tactics.
It’s always easy to read too much into post-match comments, which are both the best and worst times to interview a player due to the high emotion of a game. However, Bowen’s remarks hinted at a lack of intensity and desire, which was evident to anyone who watched the match.
While the Hammers captain stopped short of suggesting that Chelsea wanted it more than West Ham, it was certainly implied.
Speaking to TNT Sports at the London Stadium, Bowen said, “I felt like we were never in the game; it was too easy. I haven’t seen the second goal back yet, but it seemed like we were easy to play through. We gave them too much respect and weren’t even leaving little fouls on players to let them know that we were at home.”
