Nayef Aguerd left West Ham United to link up with Real Sociedad on a season-long loan on transfer deadline day last month.
West Ham signed Nayef Aguerd from Rennes back in the summer of 2022 for a fee believed to be worth around £30 million.
That signing turned out to be a catastrophic error from David Moyes though.
Aguerd quickly proved to be an awful addition for the Hammers, what with his lack of physicality and aggression.
When the Morocco international left the London Stadium in the summer, he sent a bizarre message to the West Ham fans – one that suggested he thought he had left the club permanently.
Aguerd and the Premier League were never a match made in heaven, it really is as simple as that.
The fact that we got rid of him on loan was pleasing, but now the Hammers transfer team need to get a decent fee for him next summer.
And judging by how things are going for him out in Spain right now, that seems like a very realistic prospect.
Spanish press rave about Nayef Aguerd after West Ham exit
The former Rennes man needed to get out of the London Stadium, there are no two ways about that.
He wasn’t a good fit for the Hammers, or English football for that matter.
Now he has a new chance to impress out in Spain with Real Sociedad, and it seems like that’s exactly what he’s doing.
Estadio Deportivo covered Aguerd’s start to life in Spain, and were hugely complimentary about the 28-year-old centre-back.
The Spanish publication label Aguerd as ‘the most outstanding player’ for Sociedad so far this season. They also suggest that he has been one of the few shining lights for Imanol Alguacil’s side this term.
Estadio Deportivo have also described Aguerd as an ‘elite defender’ and the ‘boss of the rearguard’.
Hang on a minute, are we talking about the same Nayef Aguerd? Or does he have an identical twin?
Aguerd suited to La Liga
The 28-year-old centre-back is clearly more suited to La Liga than he ever was to the Premier League.
Ageurd seems to be really thriving out in Spain right now, and I can see a permanent move to Sociedad being a formality for him right now.
In three La Liga appearances for Sociedad so far, Aguerd has averaged 1.3 tackles, three clearances and 1.7 successful aerial duels per game.
He is obviously playing a key role for Sociedad in their build-up play as well. He has made 66.3 passes on average per match for the Spanish side, and has recorded a mightily impressive completion rate of 92.5% (Who Scored).
The beauty of the brilliant form of Nayef Aguerd is that West Ham will be the big winners.
If he continues to play well, we will get a very decent fee for him next summer, and it’s not like we’ll think the owners made a mistake by selling him, because we all know how poorly suited his is to Premier League football.
It will be very interesting indeed to see how the Moroccan finishes the season with Real Sociedad.
