The former England manager has revealed he wants to take a break from coaching
Gareth Southgate has ruled out an immediate return to coaching. The former England manager has been linked with Manchester United and Everton in recent weeks after slow starts to the season for both clubs.
The former defender left his role with the Three Lions this summer after steering the team to the final of the European Championship, where they were beaten 2-1 by Spain.
The defeat was Southgate’s second in a major final – England lost on penalties in the same competition against Italy in 2021 – and he guided the team to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup.

Southgate has long been linked with a potential move to United, although in recent weeks Everton have been mentioned as a possible destination too. But speaking at a European Club Association event, he revealed he was not anticipating a comeback any time soon.
“I won’t coach in the next year, for sure,” he clarified. “I’m certain of that. I need to give myself time to make good decisions. When you come out of a really big role you need to give your body time, you need to give your mind time.”
According to reports, The Friedkin Group could move for Southgate as a possible successor to Sean Dyche.
The current Roma owners have agreed a deal in principle to complete a purchase of the Blues, which should go through subject to ratification from the Football Association, Premier League and FInancial Conduct Authority.
Dyche has come under pressure after a stuttering start to the season. Everton lost their first four games, although they have picked up five points in their last three outings to move out of the relegation zone.
