Emerson Palmieri may well not be fancied by West Ham United head coach Julen Lopetegui.
West Ham signed Emerson Palmieri from Chelsea in the summer of 2022, for a fee believed to be worth around £13 million.
Emerson has gone on to establish himself as a key player for the Hammers, but he has struggled for form since Julen Lopetegui took over at the London Stadium.
The 30-year-old left-back took a while to get up to full fitness, and he put in some really poor performances for us during the first month of the season.
Jamie Carragher singled out Emerson for criticism after our defeat to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup a few weeks ago.
And now it seems like Lopetegui might not be convinced by the Italian, certainly if the latest reports have any truth to them…
Julen Lopetegui not convinced by West Ham left-back Emerson Palmieri
The former Chelsea man hasn’t been anywhere near his best for the Hammers this season.
In fairness to him, he’s not alone – there have been plenty of players who haven’t hit the levels of last season just yet.
However, he was one of our most important players last term, and he’s been a huge disappointment over the past six weeks or so.
Now Lopetegui seemingly wants to bring someone in who would really keep Emerson on his toes.
According to a report from Fanatik, the Hammers are keen to sign Jayden Oosterwolde from Fenerbahce, and have been closely watching the 23-year-old.
Now, if the Dutchman does join the Hammers, could Emerson’s place in the side really be under threat?
Emerson Palmieri needs more competition at West Ham
The 30-year-old is a very good player, there really is no denying that.
However, it is no coincidence that his form has dipped since Lucas Paqueta has moved into a central position.
Emerson’s telepathic understanding with the Brazilian down the left hand flank was incredible to watch.
However, the onus is on the Italy international to start producing the goods, regardless of where Paqueta is playing.
West Ham definitely shouldn’t sell Emerson Palmieri, but we do need to bring in some proper competition and cover for him.
Aaron Crwesswell isn’t good enough to push the 30-year-old for his place in the team.
Hopefully Jayden Oosterwolde is the man who comes into the club to do exactly that.
