West Ham United signed Niclas Fullkrug from Borussia Dortmund in the summer transfer window.
However, Niclas Fullkrug has endured a really difficult start to life at West Ham, and he’s been missing since September 9th after sustaining an injury whilst on international duty with Germany.
Julen Lopetegui and Tim Steidten ending up settling on Fullkrug as the striker signing after their pursuit of Jhon Duran hit a dead end.
That now looks like a very big error indeed.
Fullkrug is still out with an injury, and it has been claimed that there are concerns within the club about his general fitness as well.
Hopefully he’ll be back in action sooner rather than later.
And a new update has just come to light regarding his current unfortunate situation.
Niclas Fullkrug twist emerges for West Ham
The Germany international’s injury remains somewhat of a mystery.
It was initially though that he’d be missing only for a couple of weeks, but it now looks like his absence could end up being six weeks as a bare minimum.
That has been a big problem for Lopetegui who has had to alternate between Michail Antonio and Jarrod Bowen through the middle.
Some supposed good news has emerged regarding Fullkrug but in my opinion, it means absolutely nothing.
According to a report from The Athletic, West Ham are due compensation from FIFA due to its club protection programme, in relation to the injury picked up by Fullkrug last month.
However, that means nothing to us in the grand scheme of things.
Fullkrug compensation useful as a chocolate teapot for West Ham
The problem is, compensation is not paid for the first 28 days of any injury, so West Ham would not have received anything until last week.
FIFA only cover up to 365 days of a player’s salary, and to a maximum of £7.5 million.
Let’s say Fullkrug is out for a further two weeks, it means that West Ham will receive three weeks worth of the German’s salary, in other words around £270,000.
That is scant consolation for the Hammers. We have had to make do without our main striker for around five weeks now.
It is fair to question the wisdom behind paying up to £27.5 million including add-ons for an injury prone 31-year-old striker from another league.
However, I do feel like we’ve been really unlucky here.
Hopefully Niclas Fullkrug will be back in action for West Ham soon, but any compensation we receive from FIFA will be about as useful as a chocolate teapot as far as I’m concerned.
