West Ham United head coach Julen Lopetegui is keen for the rest of his squad to learn from the example set by one player in particular.
Julen Lopetegui is under real pressure now, after his West Ham team lost 4-1 to Tottenham in the Premier League on Saturday.
It was a disgraceful performance and result for the Hammers, with Mohammed Kudus’s sending off late on in the game adding insult to injury.
With games against Manchester United, Newcastle and Arsenal all to come before the end of next month, things are looking pretty bleak right now at the London Stadium.
The thing is, we have a fantastic squad of players at the club, and Lopetegui has to find a way to get a tune out of them.
It seems like the Spaniard will be leaning on one player in particular over the coming weeks and months…
Julen Lopetegui says entire squad need to learn from West Ham player
The Spaniard needs his big players to stand up and be counted now, there’s no doubt about that.
It’s no time for shrinking violets.
In fact, it’s a time where the captain really needs to be a proper leader of men.
Lopetegui spoke to TNT Sports, and absolutely raved about Jarrod Bowen.
The 27-year-old was named as the new club captain in the summer, and Lopetegui is clearly pleased how he has performed in that role so far.
The Spaniard said, “He’s a big player and now he’s our captain and for sure, he’s going to develop as a big character as the captain for West Ham.“
“He’s an international player and he’s a good example for the rest because he’s a hard-working player and he’s always looking to improve. [He has] a big commitment so we are happy with him.”
See, as good as Bowen undoubtedly is, I’m not sure that Lopetegui made the right call in naming him as the new club captain.
The 27-year-old just isn’t a leader, it’s as simple as that as far as I’m concerned.
Julen Lopetegui’s main mistake was naming Bowen as the West Ham skipper, rather than Max Kilman or Tomas Soucek.
I just don’t think the former Hull City star has what it takes to grab this group by the scruff of the necks, and lift them up.
That said, he definitely does lead by example with his performances, and he has to be applauded for that.
