West Ham’s biggest signing this summer, Max Kilman, didn’t mince his words after yesterday’s 4-1 collapse against Tottenham Hotspur, acknowledging it simply wasn’t up to our standards.
Despite conceding three goals in a devastating eight-minute second-half spell, Kilman delivered a solid individual display, far from being the root of our defensive woes. It’s clear, though, that the pressure on Kilman and his partner Jean-Clair Todibo stemmed from issues further up the pitch, where teammates struggled to contain Spurs’ relentless press.
However, Kilman didn’t shy away from taking responsibility. Reflecting on the match, he admitted, “It wasn’t good enough. There was a period in the second half when we lost our grip on the game. We lost focus at critical moments, and that cost us.”
The former Wolves skipper continued, “For the quality we’ve got, we have to aim higher. The fans show up for us every week, and we need to repay that faith with performances that match their expectations. We need to keep pushing forward.”
Kilman’s comments will get a lot of agreement from Irons supporters although whether the excuse of not concentrating enough will wash is another matter . “We’ve got to get our heads down and be ready for the next one,” he added. “We know the talent is there, and it’s on us to turn things around.”
As the focus shifts to the Manchester United, the team must dig deep and possibly take heed of Kilman’s call for accountability. head coach Julen Lopetegui has rightly come in for a massive amount of stick following the loss in North London but these players are going to need to step up.
