West Ham United will play host to Manchester United in the Premier League this weekend.
Julen Lopetegui has faced fierce criticism from the West Ham fans over the past few weeks, but a win over Manchester United would relieve a lot of the pressure that he’s under.
Lopetegui hasn’t had the impact that was expected of him at he London Stadium so far, but it has been claimed that the Hammers owners will not make any knee-jerk decisions regarding the Spaniard’s future.
Man United boss Erik ten Hag is under real pressure as well, although he got a huge reprieve on Saturday when his side came from one goal down to beat Brentford 2-1 at Old Trafford.
This is quite clearly a vitally important game for both teams, where anything less than all three points could end up being terminal for either manager.
Ahead of the match, it seems like Manchester United have been handed a huge boost already…
Manchester United boost ahead of West Ham Premier League clash
Both clubs desperately need all three points this weekend.
Lopetegui and Ten Hag are really feeling the heat now, and that pressure will intensify on both of them if the game ends in a draw, or one of them if either team wins the match.
However, it seems like it’s good news for Manchester United and bad news for West Ham ahead of the huge clash.
The Premier League’s official website confirmed this morning that David Coote will be the referee for the Hammers’ clash with Man United.
Coote made an absolutely shocking decision back in 2020 during our 2-0 defeat to Tottenham.
He allowed an own goal by Tomas Soucek to stand despite the fact that Spurs centre-back Davinson Sanchez handled the ball before it hit the 29-year-old on route to finding the back of the net (Sky Sports).
He was on VAR duty during our shambolic 4-3 defeat to Newcastle in April as well, and made the appalling decision to award the Magpies a spot-kick in the second-half, after Anthony Gordon had actually kicked Kalvin Phillips, rather than the other way around.
Also, West Ham have won just two of the 12 games that Coote, 42, has officiated for us.
It seems to me that the Hammers are on the wrong end of VAR calls time and time again, while the so-called big clubs get decisions made in their favour regularly.
West Ham desperately need a win against Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday, but David Coote being named as the referee for the game does not bode well for us.
The Man United fans should be buzzing with that news though.
