Niclas Fullkrug has endured an incredibly difficult first couple of months as a West Ham United player.
West Ham signed Niclas Fullkrug from Borussia Dortmund in the summer, for a fee that could rise to £27.5 million if performance related targets are met.
The 31-year-old suffered an Achilles and calf injury back in early September, and he hasn’t been seen for us since then.
Fullkrug is still out with with his calf problem, and it has been claimed that there are real concerns within the club about his general fitness as well.
It’s looking like the Hammers made a huge error signing him instead of Jhon Duran in the summer.
He needs to be given more time, of course he does. But the general consensus is that West Ham might have bought a dud.
Now Fullkrug has come out and been extremely open regarding his struggles.
West Ham striker Niclas Fullkrug makes honest admission
With Fullkrug currently out in Germany receiving injections in his calf (The Sun), the outlook seems to be pretty bleak for him right now.
He is a proven striker who, on paper, should do well for us, but the injury he sustained whilst away on international duty with Germany in September has really hindered his progress.
When speaking to DeichStube, Fullkrug was honest enough to admit that he has experienced a bad start to life with the Hammers.
“I had a really bad start,” he said.
“I moved to London to West Ham after a very short summer break and after an intensive year last season, I think I played 57 games last season. And then a short break in which I felt that I had recovered relatively well.”
“But then I had a rocket start because I moved here a week and a half before the start of the Premier League season and had a few sessions at BVB.”
“I’m working very hard for it; I’m undergoing treatment and I’m getting good support at West Ham and I just hope that I’ll get fit again as soon as possible and can finally play in the Premier League on a permanent basis and show what I’m capable of there too.”
Fullkrug is clearly saying that he wasn’t fit enough when he joined West Ham.
That’s in spite of the fact that he told everyone he was in the best shape of his life just after he moved to the London Stadium.
So with that in mind, his latest comments served as a truly staggering admission, and they probably explain why he suffered such a big injury so early on in the season.
Niclas Fullkrug is already being written off at West Ham, and that’s clearly not fair on him.
The German deserves time to prove himself – until the end of the season would be my suggestion.
However, with no return from injury in sight just yet, the signing of Fullkrug seems like a disastrous one as things stand.
