It already looks like West Ham need to strengthen in January and they could go back to bloated Chelsea to solve some issues.
West Ham held talks with Chelsea over several players in the summer.
Todd Boehly offered Raheem Sterling to the Hammers.
West Ham were also linked with Trevoh Chalobah, David Datro Fofana and made a last ditch move for Carney Chukwuemeka.
None of the deals were done in the end but talks could resume this January given what’s happened since.
Chelsea have impressed with their start to the season under ex Hammers assistant Enzo Maresca.
Maresca has been direct with what he wants and who is – and isn’t – part of his plans at Chelsea.
West Ham meanwhile have been a mess under their new boss Julen Lopetegui.
After what was deemed a brilliant summer window, the underwhelming start has piled pressure on not only the manager but technical director Tim Steidten too.
Chelsea news means West Ham double deal is waiting to done
It seems almost ludicrous that a man responsible for bringing the likes of Mohammed Kudus, Edson Alvarez, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Max Kilman, Jean-Clair Todibo and Crysencio Summerville to West Ham is being questioned over transfers.
But it is more Steidten’s failure to address big weaknesses that have caused issues.
West Ham’s midfield is the single biggest problem. It is a hodge podge mix of players that looks like it’s been thrown together with little thought about whether they will complement one another or even function as a unit.
It is sorely lacking in athleticism, pace, power and guile.
The forward position speaks for itself.
Summer arrival Niclas Fullkrug – who was heavily linked with Chelsea before joining the Hammers – has been out for six games and has no return date.
And at left-back Emerson Palmieri has been blowing hot and cold while his only back-up is 35-year-old Aaron Cresswell, who is in his last year of his contract.
West Ham’s issues are not going away and need to be addressed.
That’s where the Blues and their bloated squad could come in.
Big news emerging from Chelsea means a West Ham double deal is waiting to done.
Firstly regarding Ben Chilwell.
Hammers big admirers of Blues outcasts who can leave in January
The England left-back has been one of the most high-profile casualties of Maresca’s unapologetic ruthlessness.
Money may be thin on the ground at West Ham in the coming window after a £155m summer spend.
But not only are the Hammers interested in Chilwell to solve their big left-back problem, Chelsea are open to an 18-month loan deal.
That’s according to journalist Graeme Bailey, speaking to TBR.
Bailey says Chilwell is desperate to leave Stamford Bridge in the New Year after Maresca made it clear he has no future at Chelsea.
Chilwell’s big wages make a permanent departure difficult and unlikely.
But Bailey says West Ham are big admirers of Chilwell and that deal would suit the Hammers down to the ground.
That deal is sitting there waiting to be done well ahead of time as we edge closer to the January window.
But it’s not the only one.
Just what West Ham need and loans make it feasible
When West Ham wanted Chukwuemeka on the last day of the window it raised eyebrows.
Many thought it was strange and that the Hammers didn’t need the midfielder.
Fast forward three months and it is now abundantly clear just why West Ham made that move.
Chukwuemeka has all the attributes Lopetegui is sorely lacking in his side.
The 21-year-old would have been perfect as he can play both centrally and out wide.
He is athletic, skilful and can really get around the pitch.
Recently Maresca made it clear once again that he too can leave on loan come January.
“I will say exactly the same thing I have said many times: Carney is a very good player, but for the amount of players we have, we decided at the beginning of the season it is probably better to leave and go somewhere, prove himself and playing 30 or 35 games than being here and play less games,” Maresca said, as reported by Goal.
“Unfortunately that didn’t happen. He is our player. He had some minutes the other day, today he was not involved. Hopefully, we can give him more minutes.”
