West Ham United take on Manchester United on Sunday, and Julen Lopetegui is apparently ready to make a big call with Edson Alvarez.
Edson Alvarez badly let down Julen Lopetegui, the West Ham fans and his teammates with a silly sending off up at Anfield against Liverpool last month.
Lopetegui has since explained the need for the Mexico international to learn how to regulate his temprer during games.
On his day, Alvarez is a very good player, and since he arrived at the London Stadium we’ve seen very good things from him.
However, the West Ham head coach needs to know that he can rely on Alvarez when the going gets tough.
Picking up stupid yellow cards, and red cards of course, does nobody any good.
Alvarez has begun our last two Premier League games on the bench, having missed the Brentford clash through suspension.
Lopetegui is said to be weighing up whether to drop Lucas Paqueta and Alphonse Areola for the Manchester United game.
But now the Spaniard could be set to mix things up even more so.
Julen Lopetegui set to perform big Edson Alvarez U-turn
The Hammers absolutely have to pick up a big result this weekend.
In my opinion, nothing less than a win will do, given the difficulty of the fixtures that lie in wait for us.
And it seems like Lopetegui is set to make some big changes for the game. We’ve already touched upon the possibility of Paqueta and Areola being dropped for the Man United clash.
But now, Lopetegui could bring Alvarez back in from the cold.
Give Me Sport are reporting that Lopetegui is set to recall the 27-year-old midfielder to the starting XI for our clash with Man United on Sunday.
I think we need Alvarez back in the team – he offers us so much.
When the Mexican doesn’t play, we don’t have anyone else who can replicate his ability to receive the ball in tight areas without panicking.
When he’s at his best, he is the glue that holds this team together.
However, Edson Alvarez must learn to control his aggression and anger on the pitch for West Ham, something that Julen Lopetegui has already opened up on.
If he does return to the team for the Manchester United clash, I expect a big performance from him.
