West Ham United made one summer signing in particular who has failed to impress as things stand.
Or more to the point, he hasn’t really been given a proper chance to prove himself at West Ham yet.
But that’s because those high up at the London Stadium don’t believe that the summer signing has what it takes at Premier League level, for the here and now at least.
There is supposedly unrest behind the scenes at West Ham, with the team failing to gel after Lopetegui brought nine new players into the club in the summer, but he will apparently be given until the new year to turn things around.
West Ham have started terribly this season, having taken just eight points from eight games, and the Hammers head coach is under intense scrutiny in his role.
He was supposed to come in and take us on to the next level, especially when playing style is concerned.
However, that hasn’t been the case yet. More worryingly, the Hammers appear to lack any kind of clear playing style or identity as a team.
And some of Lopetegui’s signings now look questionable to say the least, one especially.
Hammers hierarchy concerned about West Ham summer signing
Don’t get me wrong, Lopetegui, alongside Tim Steidten, made many top-class signings in the summer.
However, there were one or two that raised some eyebrows.
Luis Guilherme was one of the new arrivals that not every Hammers fan was fully on board with.
At 18, the Brazilian youngster was clearly going to need plenty of time to adapt to life in England and the speed and intensity of Premier League football.
And now The Athletic are reporting that the West Ham hierarchy do not believe that Guilherme is up to the levels required just yet.
Who knows, maybe he will one day go on to become a star, but for the here and now, surely the Hammers should have signed someone like Jhon Duran, or a midfield powerhouse like Youssouf Fofana instead.
It was actually claimed earlier this month that the West Ham board have been underwhelmed by the Luis Guilherme signing in the summer.
The thing is, I’m not even going to criticise the 18-year-old – he needs at least a full season before he is fully accustomed to life at West Ham.
I just find the fact that Lopetegui and Steidten brought him to the London Stadium in the summer when we were in desperate need of a pacy striker and a powerful central midfielder rather bemusing.
